How to Stay Motivated When Your Routine Feels Draining: Tips for Working Mums
Being a working mum means juggling multiple responsibilities - from career demands to family life to managing the home.
Routine can be a lifesaver, helping us stay organised and on top of everything.
But sometimes, the routine itself can feel draining.
The structure that once kept you grounded can start feeling heavy, monotonous, and exhausting.
If you’ve ever found yourself stuck in a routine rut, you’re not alone - and there are ways to reignite your motivation.
Why Routine Matters for Working Mums:
Routine can be essential for keeping everything running smoothly, especially when you’re balancing work and family.
For me, routine is key - one of my children thrives on it, and it keeps our household organised.
Since I work part-time, I also take on a large share of managing the home - from meal planning to keeping up with the never-ending cycle of washing.
Having structured days helps me stay productive, balanced, and on top of my responsibilities.
But here’s the thing - sometimes it can feel like my whole life is being led by routine.
And that’s when it starts feeling heavy.
When Routine Feels Draining:
One of the reasons routine can feel overwhelming is because we’re caught in the same patterns without any breaks or variety.
As humans, we thrive on change, creativity, and connection.
When every day starts feeling like a repeat of the last, it’s no wonder motivation dips.
Sometimes it’s not about ditching the routine entirely but breaking it up in small ways to create space for energy and creativity.
How to Break the Routine Rut:
1. Keep Weekends Flexible
For me, that often means keeping weekends flexible - no rigid plans, nothing too structured, and limited chores. I try not to do any washing during the weekend - it’s my way of giving myself a break (it never ends!).
Even though we do make plans and schedule things, we try to keep a balance between social weekends and quieter ones at home so it doesn’t become overwhelming.
2. Make Small Changes
It doesn’t have to be a big disruption - even a small change can help.
For example, I recently had to change my weekly Pilates class because my instructor went on maternity leave. Switching to another class changed my routine, but surprisingly, it energised me. It was a small shift, but it made a difference.
Whether it’s changing your workspace, trying a new activity, or simply adjusting your morning routine, even minor changes can create a sense of freshness.
3. Reconnect with Your Purpose
Sometimes, routine feels heavy because we’ve lost touch with why we’re doing what we do.
It helps to pause and ask:
What’s driving me right now?
What’s one thing I’m working toward that feels important?
What would reconnecting with my purpose look like today?
Your why might look different depending on your situation - and that’s okay.
Maybe you’re working to support your family financially.
Maybe your career is something you’re passionate about and love doing.
Or maybe your children are your biggest motivation - creating a secure and happy life for them.
Taking a moment to reflect on your why - whatever it looks like - can help you feel more connected to your choices and your path.
4. Embrace the Natural Ebb and Flow of Motivation
Motivation isn’t consistent - and that’s completely normal.
I definitely have one week a month where my energy is lower. I try to be compassionate with myself during that time, reminding myself that it’s okay to slow down.
Giving yourself permission to rest - rather than pushing through - is sometimes the best thing you can do.
When energy returns, you’ll feel more refreshed and ready to move forward.
You’re Not Expected to Be Motivated All the Time:
Working mums aren’t machines - it’s okay to have low-energy weeks and to take breaks from routine.
But if you find yourself stuck in that feeling for too long, it might be time to get some support.
Coaching can be a powerful way to reconnect with your purpose, break the cycle, and create sustainable motivation.

Final Thoughts:
Routine can be both your superpower and your challenge as a working mum.
By keeping it flexible, breaking up the monotony, and giving yourself space to reconnect with your purpose, you can keep motivation flowing - even when life feels a bit heavy.
Remember - it’s okay to take a break from routine. It’s okay to honour your need for rest.
And it’s okay to reach out for support when you’re feeling stuck.
